About Time – time, things, and people shape how we think

When I was growing up the thought of scout camp was exciting, and since I was not in a position to go to camp, I made up for it by telling tall stories to my little brother, about me being a boy scout.   I guess that sort of thing comes along with the growing up experience?  Eventually I went to Boy Scout camp for real.  We spent an entire week hiking, canoeing, and other things that scouts do.

I wonder if I remembered to express my appreciation to these leaders --- it’s a lot of work running a Scout Camp.  Something that came to my mind when I started to write this is how people pitch in and make it possible for things like a Scout Camp.  The staff was made up of scouts who were close to becoming Eagle Scouts, and Adult Leaders, most were volunteers.

The reason I feel like sharing, or putting this out to the universe, is that a while back I found some old memorabilia, which brought back a lot of memories.  These memories surely helped shape my life, were early signs of my interests, and they shaped how I think.

It was high on a shelf in a storage room.  I didn’t even know any of that stuff was still around.   It sure got my mind going.  There were a couple of awards I had won.  They were nothing special, other than to me, and maybe the people had made them.  One award was for first place in the “Heaving Bar,” event, and another was for “Best Hiker.”

To compete in Heaving Bar event a scout would grab an uncoiled rope from the ground, and then carefully coil it, so they could throw one end of it over a horizontal bar that had been tied between two treetops.  The bar was about twenty five feet above the ground.  Once the scout had thrown the rope, they would run up to where the rope was, hopefully hanging over the bar and back down to the ground.
Then they would grab it and tie a timber hitch around a log, that on the ground below the bar.  Next they would run back to the starting place and pull the log off the ground.  Finally, they would tie a clove hitch, around a stake that was in the ground.  (Whew . . . say that quickly, three times!)
It was a timed event, and I had spent a good portion of the week practicing, so when the competition came, I did well.  The awards were not 24 karat gold or anything like that, but to a young boy they meant something.  It seems they helped to build confidence and act as a kind of measuring stick, to let us know that “maybe I am o.k.”

It is interesting how these symbols hold a physiological value.  It seems our cultures are built around them.  Many things are intangible, especially the important ones.  Maybe these tangibles fill in for the intangible things?

One intangible is our dependence on each other.  It starts when we are born, and continues until we move on to the happy hunting ground.   First we are born dependant on our parents.   Next, we strive to be “independent.”   Most of us feel a need to be “independent,” or to take care of ourselves.   I remember distinctly growing up, wanting to show “I” could do this, win this game or trophy, travel to this place, climb this mountain, shoot this gun, have things like cars, clothes, etc.

This phase seems to be about figuring out who we are, what we are about, and gaining confidence, experimenting, and learning.   Eventually we hit a point where we may realize there is a bigger picture; we see there is more to life than just material things.  During this stage in my life I found that with focus and time I could compete well and reach the top levels of most activities or skills, I earned money for a car, to buy the cloths, climbing gear, etc.

Eventually there came a time when those things did not seem to motivate or drive me anymore, they just were not as cool as they had seemed.   This is where I learned the difference between temporal things, and spiritual things.  This saying seems to communicate the idea.

“It seems with temporal things the anticipation of getting them far exceeds the realization of having them.  In spiritual things the realization far exceeds the anticipation.”

It might be compared to getting a new car.  Sounds exciting and all, but when you finally get it, it is not nearly as cool as you thought it was going to be.   Now that is not to say a car is bad, but rather it is a tool and if used to project an image or to make up for lack of self esteem, etc., it is not going to do the trick.  On the other hand, we could use that car to drive some friends into a trailhead, and go on a backpacking trip, share in each other’s personalities, thoughts, and other unique qualities, while in the mountains. Then we come back having had a great experience on the celestial side.

There was a period of a few years in which I was sort of searching for my purpose, or something to drive me, like a life-long goal.   During this time I did a lot of thinking about the bigger picture, and how I fit in.  It is interesting to note how sometimes we feel we are stuck, or that we are not making progress; then after we make it through the situation we can see we were progressing, although slowly.

I ended up doing some deep soul searching about life, relationships, goals, and many things.   I was looking for a path that held heart, something I felt driven by; and it seemed to be associated with my personal gifts I would ultimately share with others.

This is where I became more aware of the third stage, and working with the idea that we “all” are “Interdependent.”  To have the quality of life we enjoy, we must act and figure out how to interact in a positive manner, and one that leads in a good direction.   I believe we are far more dependent on others  than most of us would like to think.  It is almost an oxymoron.  We must all help make sure we thrive individually, and yet, help build the team.  I believe this is why the saying about U and I popped into my mind.

My football coach used to say, “There is no I in team.”  It made me think about that idea for a long time.  I am guessing he was talking about team work, but in saying that way, it sort-of undercut the importance of the individual.  We all bring important qualities to the table of life, and I believe we need to remember that as well.  To help communicate that idea, I eventually I came up with this saying,

“There is no “I” in Team; nor is there a “U” but without “U and I” there is no team.”

If we as people, had only taken care of ourselves, and did not work together, with the created synergy, we would still be living in caves or hollow logs.  Synergy is important but it is not understood very well.  There is far more to synergy than just teamwork.  There is a spiritual component or part, that when we are able to add it together with teamwork, we create miracles.

During this period of introspection, I found I loved the out of doors, the mountains, or basically the natural environment in general.  I liked learning the skills associated with the out of doors, adventures like camping, climbing, hiking, sailing, SCUBA, etc.   It seemed like I was a good instructor, and liked teaching.  I found relationships to be of key importance, they increased or added to the experience of living life.  Eventually, I decided, “People are the Spice of Life.”

I also noticed some of the problems and struggles we as humans deal with or encounter in everyday life, and in relationships.  Trying to better understand them stirred me to ponder why?  Through reading, listening to tapes, seminars, and self introspection, I was able to notice there were better ways to interact, things to do, and things to avoid, and by doing them it would lead to a higher quality of life and a better life experience.

These were things which had nothing to do with age, race, religion, nationality, etc., but were simply “good principles,” to live by—they just seemed to make life better for everybody.  Not to those things aren’t important, just that maybe there is a way to use these fundamental “good living principles,” to help us build a better tomorrow.   So I decided I would set a goal to be in the mountains as often as I could, learn more about mountaineering and the natural environment, teach these skills and ideas to others, and share these good living principles with others.  Now I was in the interdependent mode sharing my own unique gifts.

Here’s a principle based idea you might like:  It seems to deal with consciously thinking about things we do in life, but from a different perspective.  This movie communicates it a good concept or principle about living life well.   As I started watching the movie I was not overly impressed.  It was kind-of different and had a slow start.  Finally, after stopping it a time or two, I finally ended up watching it all the way through---and I am glad I did.

It was about a funny looking red headed boy on his twenty first birthday.  The show had boy- girl friend stuff, family stuff, living life things, etc.  Then the father has a special talk with his son, and tells him that his father had the same talk with him, on his twenty first birthday.   Now, he was going to share a family secret with him.

The father explained that the males in their family could travel back in time.  Then he explained some of the rules, how it worked and how it would not work.  What he had to do is go to a secluded place, clinch his fists, and think of the point in time he wanted to go back to, and wham!  We went back in time.

In the next part of the show the boy goes about living life, and then redoing or fixing certain things in his life, by going back in time and redoing them.  Like he goes on a date, and messes it up, and is not very happy about it.   So he picked out a certain time just before the date and he would go back and redo the experience, except he would change it to the way he figured was best.

Much of the show is about various scenarios dealing with time travel and how changing things this way or that, can make them better, and sometimes not.  The thing that made the entire movie a very worthwhile was the last part.  He had lived most of his life.  His dad got cancer, so they went back in time to spend more time with him.  He did this over and over.  Eventually, due to how it worked, he had to make a choice to let his dad be gone and get on with his life, or not, so of course, he moves on with his life.  He has his share of struggles, and challenges, etc., but at the end of the show, he stops going back in time.   He had learned a lot about life, and there was one thing in particular he learned and started doing, which I really liked.

Rather than going back in time and trying to fix his mistakes, he had learned to live each day, as though he had gone back in time, and was now doing it the way he wanted the first time around.  He would make choices, carry out actions and do relationships, as he would have, had he gone back to redo them or fix them.   The movie is called, “About Time,” you may be able to find it on You Tube, if you are interested.

Ultimately, as I mentioned above, life teaches us that it is not about being “dependant,” nor is it about being “independent.”  Although there are times we may want to be independent, it appears that learning the importance of interdependence, is the key to a better life.  Once we have experienced and learned about dependence, and independence, we find, “Interdependence,” creates synergy, and with synergy we can have a, “Life of Abundance, coupled with good health and good relationships and love,”

“The Real Champions of Tomorrow will be Champions of Cooperation, Rather than Competition.”
Sometimes our history gets in the way of interacting in a synergistic way.  We often feel we are different from each other, and of course, in many ways we are, but it appears to me that when it comes to the really important things, we are very much alike.   I see our history as an overcoat, a shirt, a pair of pants, a blanket, or pair of shoes we wear.  It is not us, but we feel like it is.

Still more things which shaped my life,
"What has shaped the way you live your life?"
As I looked at this memorabilia it started me thinking about how these things have colored or shaped the way I think and feel.  In some ways it was good, and in others, well, maybe not so good.  Since we all come from many different backgrounds, it is going to require time (maybe even a few generations) and patience to learn how our past has shaped the way we think.

Learning to coexist is essential to our well being.  How sad it would be,  to have spent thousand of years fighting  with each other, and continue to do so; and ultimately miss out on how wonderful life can be when we understand how synergy works, and the benefits that come from it.

I believe “we” can and are making the world a better place to live, and “we” are making good progress.   One last thought, Imagine if we could spend all of the money, time, energy, mental skills, etc. that we put into building bombs, fighting each other, or trying to protect ourselves; and spent it on making the world a better place?   We really do have a better tomorrow awaiting us!

Ropes, Pulleys, Rigging Systems, and Avoiding Dangerous Resultants

I am excited about sharing this with you, and hearing your comments and questions.

There is too much info to list it all here, but these of the working files and topics I address, in depth,  and comment on:

Just a some of the information included:
The answer the cable clamp question.  The clamps are on backwards, if the clamps are tightened to the proper torque, they will weaken the cable to less 1/3 its rated strength!  If they are over tightened it weaken it even further because it is crushing the fibers or steel strands of wire.  We use the old saying, "Never Saddle a Dead Horse."  Well the live side is the load or working side of the steel rope,  and the dead side is the side without load on it.  The broad surface area of the saddle spreads the force out, thus not crushing the steel rope strands.

The above sample page does not include friction of the pulley nor or the friction
of the rope bending around the pulleys.

Falls, rope strength, and . . .

How dynamics, like a fall, effect the breaking strengths of a rope?  Most published MBS's (minimum breaking strengths) are determined using a slow pull method, with each end wrapped around large diameter bars.  These affect heat *dissipation and **critical radius; when combined they can cause a rope to break at as high as 75% "below" many published breaking strengths.

Our rescue team had the unpleasant task of retrieving a young climber's body, who experienced these unpleasant circumstances.  He had bought a length of high strength nylon cordage; which had a published MBS of 600 lbs.  He then he tried rappelling down a cliff, and had a parting experience . . .

At first thought, it seems logical.  A person might feel safe considering most published knot strengths show they are 50% to 75% efficient.   Factor in his weight of less than 250 lbs, including his gear, it might seem logical?   Unfortunately, dynamics created heat, which reduced the knot's efficiency even further; and it ruined his entire day . . .

With this in mind we conducted some tests to find the MBS of low stretch rope, with various knot tied in them, by pulling the slowly, medium fast, and at the speed gravity created using as solid (a body absorbs part of the energy) mass of weighing about 225 lbs.

Resultant angles of force (pull), in the above (left) case, there is only about 1,410 lbs of force on the anchor, but the right example has a resultant force of 2,000 lbs (friction is not factored in)

Avoiding Dangerous Resultants...  In this picture we are demonstrating a resultant angle of force, which will cause the tripod to over turn (Solid arrow) and a resultant force of 1.81 multiplied by the force on the rope, i.e.:  One person (225 lbs x 1.81 = 407 lbs) pulling in the direction of the solid arrow.  In this case, the arrow or force is focused outside of the "magic triangle."  If this force is outside of the triangle created by the base of the tripod, it will tip over.

As my bod, and circumstances allow,  I look forward to sharing these and other skills in an effort to contribute technical rescue, work, and training.  I appreciate the opportunity to work, train, and enjoy the natural environment with you.  During this part of my career I plan to spend time with my family, friends, and myself, sharing these skills and ideas.

Working at Height

 Professional Work at Height Skills

Fall prevention, protection, and fall recovery skills

This includes: Roofers,   Framers,   Construction Professionals,   Man lifts Operators,   Arborists, Window   Washing Professionals,   Construction Cleanup,   Siding and Soffit Professionals,   Fire Fighting Professionals,   High Rise Professionals,   Ski Lift and Tram Maintenance Professionals,   Tower Installation and Maintenance,   Cable and Satellite Professionals,  Line Professionals,  Ladder Users and Trench Scaffolding Workers,  and . . .

Who is the training for?  Wives, Kids, Brothers, Uncles, Aunts, Business Owners, and of course, You.  Falls are the number one killer in construction, number two in industry, and maybe more at home and at play.

Little Known Facts about Falls:

People who die during a fall generally feel no fear, just a profound acceptance of the situation.
If a fall kills a person chances are they feel no pain whatsoever.
A six foot fall can develop over 2 tons of force
Fall the number one killer in construction and number two in industry.
Fall kill and injure many at home and while at play.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) recently released their 2015 Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI) and the construction industry once again topped the list with 937 worker deaths. This is about a 4% increase in occupational fatalities over the 899 reported for 2014. This is the largest number of construction worker deaths since 2008.

Many more are injured and survive falls, to carry a life long memory of it.

Hang time, while wearing a belt verses a full body harness.
Fall recovery is an emergency, suspension trauma,  or
orthostatic intolerance, a condition where the blood pools in
the lower torso.  Leg loops, and the harness make it hard for
the blood to return to the head, heart, kidneys, etc.  It is like
when someone passes out while standing at attention, but
in that case, they end up horizontal and then the blood
flows back into the upper torso.  It can kill in 30 minutes.
Prevention is best, but if the harness arrests the fall, the skills,
and a plan for recovery/rescue is critical.

Scaffolding skills and ladder skills are not common
sense, although they can be learned.  Notice how
well this set of scaffolding is set up?  Most must
look twice to notice.  These are skills I teach in the
Situational Awareness and Risk Exposure Training
In would be a honor to arrange a training session for
your team.

This video has some crazy falls from ladders.  Worth watching  Please do give me a call, or email me so we can set up some training.

SFX Work, the Totem Pole in Monument Valley

Bill, our Art Director showing off his life sized statue.
Specially built so that as they begin the reveal, it eyes open.
I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to be of service a wide range of people.  The following is a Asahi Glass TV Commercial,  It won a award, which always make us feel good.  Although working on the table top size top of the Totem Pole was a little nerve racking.

Our assignment was to mount a life sized statue of  Rodin's “The Thinker.”  It’s eyes were made to open up and look back as the reveal begins.

Check out the commercial, see what you think.  I wonder how much weight it would take to tip it over?   And  I often wonder how many more years the Totem Pole will remain standing?

This adds an entirely new feeling to being, "lonely at the top, although "The Thinker" is there with us.
By the way, if we can be of service to you, or your organization, it would be an honor.  Consultation is a good place to start.  Thanks for stopping by.l

Safety while doing SFX and Stunt Work in High Risk Environments

I guess I was about 19 +/- some years young when it dawned on me that I did not “have to know it all.”  Up until then I often found myself talking as though I had already done it, or at the least, I was well informed about “it.”  From there I slowly began to learn how to say, “I do know as much about that as I would like, but I would like to learn more.  This is what I do know . . .”
What a freeing set of words, not having to BS or fib about a subject so that I could save face, or be accepted by my friends.  I am guessing some of you relate to that idea.  Above is a picture of a stunt sequence I engineered, along with the assistance of a mighty fine team.  You know life is so much better, and more productive, and fulfilling when we learn how to interact well with one another.

This site had a very high [1]risk potential and a very serious [2]risk factor.  We had to use a rubber raft to ferry everyone and much of the equipment over to the other side.   Equipment and gear that did not fit in the rubber raft had to be transported across the river on a rope [3]highline system.

White Water is white because it is so full of air; swimming is next to impossible because you sink like a rock.  When you try to swim the water provides very little resistance, consequently, you have little or nothing to pull or kick against.  Also the movement of the water is very high risk due to the water’s velocity.  It weights more than eight pounds per gallon, and a river is full of many gallons pushing you, it is awful scary, and deadly.  There are foot traps, strainers, deadly recirculation eddies, and . . .

Just setting up was outrageous, shooting the scene was even more outrageous.  The idea was to have these two adventurers be crossing the rope bridge, and while crossing one of them was to fall and be caught by the rope that tied them together.  Then the one on the bridge would use his great strength to pull his partner back up, and they would close by showing a victory shoot, of them sitting on the other side, holding bottles of vitamin drink.

In the picture to the right you can see Kane falling from the rope bridge, with a stunt catch line, attached to him, to stop the fall, and a camera rope, with a break-away point in the middle of it.
The break-away is just in case the stunt fails.  That way Ki, would not be pulled into the river with Kane.  Wow, was Kane trusting his life to me, and our super fine team!
Watch for the 3rd edition

Had the system failed the white water would have bounced and tumbled him over a thirty or forty foot cliff into a pool of water.  We had stationed a Rescue Swimmer, in a Kayak below as a safety precaution, but . . .

You can see the Swiss Jib and the camera below him, which has been located on a platform, on the other side of the river.  For more information watch for the 3rd edition of "Ropes, Pulleys, Rigging Systems, and Dangerous Resultants.

Below are a few shots of the various activities which must take place to shoot a 30 second TV commercials such as this.  This may seem like a lot of work, and it is, but I would also like to point out that the talent or actors, do as much work, if not more.

That was an eye opener early in my career.  I thought all they do was show up smile for the camera, and say a few words, and run off, but I have been impressed with the work involved in all aspects of movies and commercials.

Link to an introduction to advanced safety skills;

I offer a 90 minute presentation on Understanding Risk Exposure and Safety.  It can be taught along with Fall Protection Certification.  This training meets OSHA standards and requires for Work at Height, (work six feet above the ground or a lower level)  I provide a Certificate you can copy and put in your files (per osha requirements) , and a laminated wallet card.

I would appreciate the opportunity to be of service to you.  Thanks for checking out this blog

Vision of Love

Hi Douglas Hansen here,

Recently, I rediscovered one of my favorite songs, it is called: "Vision of Love. by MariahCarey. It reminded me of something that is very easy to overlook.  Love is powerful, wonderful, and so much more.  It is the foundation of everything good.

It reminds me of a Vision of Love, I still have.  It is a dream, but unfortunately, it feels like it may slip away?  It is powerful and important, at least it is to me.    It is much more than just a new car, or new house, or other tangible thing.  I will see if I can explain . . .

A short time after I returned from active duty in the military, I realized I had skydived, climbed mountains, explored caves, adventure into Anasazi ruins, and more, but the activity by itself, and the materiel things were not all I thought they would be.  What I did figure out was that people, and sharing these things with them was what really made.

"People are the Spice of Life."  Just like the lemon pepper I put on my food, it makes plain rice or soup, or almost anything more palatable.  Without people the challenges in life would be overwhelming.  I must admit, life has been rather challenging for me, over the past few years and when I heard these words, which she sang so well it reawakened something inside of me, that is almost like a curse.

Maybe my mother taught me this, and I am glad she did, but it hurts sometimes.  My parent ended up getting married at a rather young age, and things did not work out for them.  Anyway, my mother had to raise me during the early years of my life.  One thing which she taught me, which is easier to communicate is, "She taught me never to fight."  Well, in theory it is a great idea.  In actuality, in the short term, it led to being bullied and chased home from school, by kids smaller than I.

This led to some challenging situations. That was to change later in life when she remarried.  My other father saw me run into house with kids chasing me.  It only took a moment, and I realized I was flying back out the door.  He had grabbed me and turned me around, and gave me a good boot, while explaining that I was to “Get back out there and kick his tail.”

I do not remember all of the details, but the kids stopped picking on me, and my self esteem began to grow.  At the time, that may have been a good way to handle that.  I guess there are times when it is appropriate to fight?  I am not suggesting she did a bad thing, but she did the only thing she could, “She taught me the good living principles as she best could.”  She is intelligent and caring woman.  She probably taught me some of my EQ skills, or being more sensitive to other people’s needs, and concerns, as well as mine.

Had I developed and understood these important EQ skills, and the defensive skills, I probably could have avoided many of the confrontations of youth.  Confidence has a way of quelling things.  Of course, that is dependent on the other person’s understanding of life; and the importance of alliance.  My father"s" each taugh me important and good skills too.

Studies that I have seen suggest that your EQ is more important than your IQ?  One book I have read, by Dale Carnegie, says that EQ skills are responsible for 85% of your success in life, whereas IQ is only 15% responsible?  Makes sense to me.

Well, back to my dream, it is tied to a curse which I deal with.  It was my goal to build a business around mountaineering, backpacking and the out of doors, and climb Mt Everest.  Everest was to be like the Super Bowl.  I figured it would give me some credibility and attract people’s interest.  From there I figured I would share outdoor skills with them, and when it made sense, I would slip in a few thoughts about the good living principles of life.

I do not have enough room to communicate the big picture, which I have experienced on climbing trips.  It is kind-of like a soccer game, or baseball game where the other team is really testing there own skills, by doing things that make sure you are playing your “A” game, rather than what sometimes happens, where one team tries to tear the other team down to their skill level.

When both teams, play to aid the other team to be their best, then both teams end up playing an unforgettable game!  The points are just the excuse to shine, and share in a friendly competition rather than

I believe life can be that way, and in fact, we are doing a pretty good job at it.  Compare the last few hundred years, to the last few thousand, you can see we live a life that is much better than the world on average, has experienced, in the prior few thousand years of . . . doing what they have done.  “How it working?”  Well, we are doing much better, yea!

Oh, I bet you are wondering about my curse.  Well, it is like this, I “feel” like I can “visualize and almost touch,” how wonderful life is, when we live together in a positive, synergistic manner.  Call me crazy if you want, but I can touch it and feel it, from time to time when talking with others, teaching classes, or on adventures of one sort or another.  It is like magic, and other people feel it too.

I still have the dream, which I believe is trying to find me.  Will things come together?  Who knows?  May I suggest  that you go to youtube.com and watch: Mariah Carey sing - Vision Of Love (from Fantasy_ Live at Madison Square Garden)

Here’s the words just in case you are interested.

Vision of Love
Treated me kind
Sweet destiny
Carried me through desperation
To the one that was waiting for me
It took so long
Still I believed
Somehow the one that I needed
Would find me eventually
I had a vision of love
And it was all that you've given to me
Prayed through the nights
Felt so alone
Suffered through alienation
Carried the weight on my own
Had to be strong
So I believed
And now I know I've succeeded
In finding the place I conceived
I had a vision of love
And it was all that you've given to me
I had a vision of love
And it was all that you've given me
I've realized a dream
And I visualized
The love that came to be
Feel so alive
I'm so thankful that I've received
The answer that heaven has sent down to me
You treated me kind
Sweet destiny
And I'll be eternally grateful
Holding you so close to me
Prayed through the nights
So faithfully
Knowing the one that I needed
Would find me eventually
I had a vision of love
And it was all that you've given to me
I had a vision of love
And it was all that you turned out to be
